Your role at St John of God Murdoch Hospital
As
Lactation Consultant you will provide evidence-based practices in assisting lactation for a wide range of breastfeeding issues, this includes working with mothers in establishing and maintaining breastfeeding in all complex situations. Lactation consultants incorporate mother’s preferences in achieving their breastfeeding goals and facilitating positive parent-infant bonding.
The Position
- Responsible for providing the necessary care to meet the mother and newborn/ infant breastfeeding goals.
- Perform a breastfeeding assessment of the mother and neonate/ infant utilising evidence based tools.
- Promote an environment of confidence, confidentiality and respect.
- Maintain an awareness of scope of practice while providing care in the inpatient/ outpatient environment.
- Actively escalate maternal and neonatal/infant complications outside of scope of practice to relevant midwifery / medical practitioners.
- Document all breastfeeding assessments (maternal and infant) in the relevant medical progress notes.
- Develop and communicate individualized breastfeeding care plans in collaboration and consultation with mothers.
- Ensure all necessary equipment is available, adequately cleaned and prepared using infection control procedures and in safe working order.
- Effectively manage time schedule using technology based workforce deployment tools.
- Plan and deliver breastfeeding education to expectant parents (antenatal classes), group breastfeeding support sessions (ward based) and ward caregivers.
- Participate in quality improvement activities related to breastfeeding.
- Maintain an awareness of current breastfeeding practices and research, by attendance at relevant seminars, workshops and self-directed learning.
You will have effective communication and documentation skills with the ability to use technology based work deployment tools (or the ability to learn technology based systems easily).
Knowledge of and skills in the principles of infection control, with understanding of health care safety and knowledge in accordance with NSQHS Standards will be required. You will be commitment to on-going education and self-directed learning with the ability to work as part of a team.
To succeed you will you will hold a current Senior First Aid Certificate in addition to current Certification as a Lactation Consultant (IBCLC® certified) with recent experience as a Lactation Consultant in either an inpatient/ outpatient setting. Previous Health care qualifications (i.e. Registered Nurse, Midwife or Allied Health Professional) is essential to the role.

- Salary: $76,387 to $82,250, plus 11.5% superannuation
