About This Opportunity
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled researcher to join our National Heart Foundation and NHMRC-funded program, which evaluates the safety, quality, and outcomes of hospital care using nationally linked hospital data. The ideal candidate will have a PhD (or be near completion) or equivalent qualifications and experience in health outcomes research, epidemiology, statistics, or health services research, along with strong analytical skills and a solid record of research achievements.
As a Research Fellow, you will take a leading role in developing and conducting research alongside the investigator team. Your work will focus on hospital care for cardiovascular disease and other common conditions, looking at factors such as treatment safety, effectiveness, costs, and disparities, especially in regional and remote areas, using linked national hospital data. You will also contribute to writing publications, reports, and other communications. Excellent analytical and communication skills, along with experience in leading research within a collaborative environment, are essential.
This is an exciting opportunity to join a diverse team of academics, clinicians, and research students. The role involves both epidemiological and health services research, particularly working with large healthcare datasets. This position is perfect for someone who loves working with data and has strong analytical skills, with a desire to help improve the safety and quality of hospital care. There are also excellent opportunities to develop your own independent research career.
The contract end date is based on current funding arrangements. Usual discussions will occur prior to this date as to the likelihood of continuation of this funding.
Key Responsibilities Will Include
- Research: Collaborate with the study investigator to undertake research tasks, conduct analyses, and deliver project outcomes in line with the statistical analysis plan.
- Produce high-quality research outputs and contribute to competitive research funding applications.
- Develop and grow a coherent research program, drawing upon best practices and facilitating the translation of findings to end users.
- Supervision and Researcher Development: Contribute to the supervision and development of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students, providing feedback, coaching, and professional development.
- Manage and support research staff effectively, resolving conflicts and ensuring alignment with university policies and procedures.
- Citizenship and Service: Demonstrate citizenship behaviours that align to the UQ Values

About You
- Completion (or near completion) of a PhD in epidemiology, statistics, health services or outcomes research
- An emerging profile in research in any of the above research areas.
- Demonstrated ability to undertake analyses using STATA, SAS, or equivalent analytic software
- Experience in research using Australian hospital administrative datasets such as the Admitted Patient Collections and Emergency Department Data Collections or equivalent.
- Demonstrated ability to undertake research independently and as part of a team
- Evidence of publications in reputed refereed journals and presenting at conferences.
- Evidence of contributions towards successfully obtaining external research funding.
The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including right to work in Australia, education check, mandatory immunisations.
