We are seeking a dedicated
Miyalk Maternity Cultural Engagement Lead to guide and support the development of a Yolŋu-led maternity redesign project, focusing on embedding culturally safe, holistic, and continuous care into the Miwatj maternity model. This part-time role involves engaging with communities, mentoring Yolŋu navigators, supporting intergenerational reproductive health education, and working with Cultural Knowledge Authorities to revitalize Yolŋu ancestral and midwifery knowledge. The successful candidate will help design supportive maternity care, coordinate women’s ceremonies, and provide cultural guidance to non-Yolŋu staff. Overnight travel to Zone 2 communities (Galiwin’ku, Gapuwiyak, Milingimbi, Ramingining) is required.

Miwatj Health is an independent Aboriginal Community-Controlled Health Service. Established in 1992, we’re committed to securing quality health care services across the East Arnhem and enabling Yolŋu powered community health and wellbeing. Miwatj provides culturally appropriate, comprehensive primary health care to over 6,000 remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents across 3 East Arnhem wards. With a Head Office in Nhulunbuy, Miwatj also manages a Corporate Office in Darwin, 7 fixed clinics across the East Arnhem region, and dedicated outreach teams who travel to 3 additional locations.
Essential Requirements
We are looking for someone with a strong understanding and commitment to Aboriginal Community Control and self-determination, particularly the issues faced by Yolŋu people in remote settings. Essential to the role are effective communication skills in both English and Yolŋu Matha, confidence in advocating for women’s needs in healthcare settings, and experience in planning community activities to enhance maternity services. Foundational knowledge of reproductive health, including childbirth physiology, newborn care, and postpartum fertility, is required. The role also demands a commitment to personal and professional growth, fostering intergenerational relationships for cultural mentoring, and proficiency (or capacity to develop) therapeutic practices to support Yolŋu women throughout their pregnancy journey.
