We are hiring a Laboratory Assistant to work at our laboratory in Oaks, Pennsylvania.
The Laboratory Assistant represents the laboratory to our clients, patients, vendors and health care providers. The Laboratory Assistant supports the laboratory administration and staff in the daily operation of all tasks as assigned and must be able to use independent judgment and knowledge to perform all related tasks; organization of laboratory documents and materials, intra and extra laboratory communications, maintaining office equipment and supplies, ordering and inventory, and accessioning support. Maintains patient confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential.
This will be a 3rd Shift role 3am - 11:30am, M - F.
- Represents the laboratory by answering phones and communicating messages to appropriate personnel.
- Able to solve most problems and handle difficult situations with little or no supervision. Has both written and oral communicative capabilities to comprehend technical material and communicate with medical professionals.
- Keeps office equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs.
- Orders supplies for the laboratory as per procedure. Maintains office supplies inventory by checking stock; anticipating needs; placing and expediting orders; verifying receipt.
- Maintains competency to perform laboratory duties as assigned.
- Assist administration in retrieving and QA reports and data.
- Serves and protects the health care community by adhering to professional standards, laboratory policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and College of American Pathologists (CAP) standards.
- Routine maintenance of instruments, temperature monitoring and inventory management of department.
- Filing of completed samples, slides and cassette blocks and discarding of samples past retention date.
Technical Responsibilities:
CYTOLOGY
- Preparation, staining, transport, imaging and organization of Cytology samples
- Prioritization of STAT repreps from Cytology Diagnostic Team
- Batching of accessioned samples for T2000/T5000 workbenches
CORE LABORATORY
- Spinning and sorting of samples
- Preparing urines for testing
- Microbiology plating of urine cultures
- Preparing specimens for storage
- Pulling samples for lot to lot and additional testing
HISTOLOGY
- Clean, prepare and sort cassette blocks for cutting
- Prepare specimens for grossing, write up sheet, sort specimens on cart
- Setup instruments for daily use and refill reagents as needed
- Assist with pathologist intradepartmental consultation and filing as needed
Additional Responsibilities:
- Performs all procedures as per policy and procedure.
- Required attendance at staff meetings and all other training including continuing education programs.
- Assist with gathering data and possible transport of samples.
- Performs other duties and works in other areas as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Education:. Bachelor’s degree in Science
- At least 1 year clinical laboratory experience
Work Environment:
- Exposed to both biohazardous and hazardous substances.
- May be exposed to the risk of blood borne diseases.
- Exposure to a variety of electro-mechanical hazards.
- Exposure to odorous chemicals and specimens.
