Position Summary:
The primary role of the physician assistant will be to participate in the assessment and care of surgery patients, including Vascular Surgery and Urology, under the supervision of the attending physician. The PA will provide care using evidence-based clinical practice standards and will adhere to established protocols. All activity will be under the direct supervision of a Vascular Surgeon or Urologist, and within the medical directives endorsed by the RVH Medical Advisory Committee.

- Head of the Urology Division; and
- Manager, Academic and Medical Affairs
Qualifications:
Education:
- Secondary School Diploma or Equivalent
- Undergraduate Degree
- Graduate of a Canadian or US Accredited Physician Assistant Education Program
- Eligible to challenge the National Physician Assistant Certificate Exam, or Canadian Physician Assistant Certification – Mandatory
- BCLS, and ACLS
Experience:
- At least one year experience working in an acute care/inpatient setting
- Preference will be given to candidates with experience working in a surgical program, including but not limited to, Vascular Surgery and Urology

- Demonstrate proficient and appropriate use of diagnostic and procedural skills
- Recognize their scope of practice while demonstrating effective and appropriate consultation practice with other healthcare professionals in respect to patient care, education and legal opinions
Responsibilities:
Clinical And General Responsibilities
- Independently perform daily rounds (including assessment, management planning and documentation) on all patients admitted to the service and any off-service patients requiring Vascular Surgery and/or Urology care
- Arrange and carry out appropriate discharge plans including coordination of appropriate outpatient and community supports
- Perform comprehensive assessments, make differential diagnoses, order appropriate testing, coordinate and plan the management of Vascular Surgery and Urology patients requiring admission from the Emergency Room or outpatient clinic
- Assess and manage unanticipated clinic visits for Vascular Surgery and Urology patients presenting with acute issues not requiring emergency care
- Assist with consultations for new patient referrals to the program
- Actively participate in the Vascular Surgery and Urology program development, database management and quality improvement
- Surgical assisting in the Operating Room
- Independently performing procedures under the direction of a Urologist or Vascular Surgeon (potentially including: cystoscopy, urodynamics, wound debridement, etc.)
Communication
When/as directed by a physician:
- Provide relevant information and explanations, including a proposed treatment plan, to the supervising physician and seek further direction where appropriate.
- Provide education to patients, families and other health providers as appropriate to the clinical setting.
- Communicate with other members of the health care team and other hospital departments, both orally, in writing and electronically.
Medical Documentation and Record Keeping
- Maintain clear, accurate and appropriate records of the patient encounter and management plan
- Admission notes, progress notes and discharge notes as needed
- Dictated records as appropriate
- Consultation requests
- Other types of documentation as required by the particular setting
Consultation with Vascular Surgery and Urology and Multidisciplinary Team
- Collaboration with all aspects of the Vascular Surgery and Urology team including (but not limited to) physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, clerical staff, technicians, physiotherapists and occupational therapists, social workers, patient representatives and administrative staff to provide optimal care for patients.

Supervision
- While not a requirement to exercise supervision, it is inherently a tenant of healthcare professions. There may also be opportunities for supervision/teaching roles as the Physician Assistant program grows at RVH; occasionally explains work procedures to new or inexperienced employees.
Hours of Work
- Varied hours per week depending on schedule block.
