The Cytotechnologist will provide professional services including interpretation of Pap Test slide preparations using the Thin Prep Imaging System, proficiency testing, quality control, and other functions toward the attainment of the laboratory’s quality and timeliness goals.
Essential Functions:
- Interprets physician notes, when clinical information is contradictive or missing.
- Determines specimen adequacy for all cytology and histology samples.
- Examines and evaluates cell samples for normal cell patterns, non-malignant or benign conditions that might exist such as microorganisms, therapeutic change, inflammation, repair and hyperplastic changes and makes appropriate recommendations on the report.
- Examines and evaluates cell samples for the presence of abnormal cells.
- Determines severity and cell type of the abnormality and if needed, provides criteria to identify origin. Makes appropriate recommendations on the report.
- Uses recognized terminology to document and transmit the diagnosis/findings in the laboratory information system.
- Documents daily, weekly, and monthly workloads.
- Maintains legal limits for all types of microscopic work.
- Reviews cases at the microscope and discusses diagnostic criteria with pathologists, senior cytotechnologists and other cytotechnologists as needed.
- Identifies individual screening issues observed through quality control activities.
- Performs and documents daily, monthly, quarterly, & annual maintenance.
- Processes specimens and evaluates control slides
- Receives, accesses, or reject all specimens by following standard operating procedures (SOP’s).
- Performs data entry of case information into the appropriate computer system, ensuring that all identifying information is accurate and in the appropriate format
- Grosses, processes, embeds, cuts, stains, special stains, IHC, recuts, and coverslips all cytological and surgical specimens received into the anatomic pathology laboratory.
- Reviews control slides to ensure proper staining patterns.
- Validate equipment, detection kits, antibody lots, blockers, inhibitors, control tissue and new antibodies before use on any specimen.
- Prepare stock reagents for use on manual and automated processes.
- Review cases at the microscope and discuss diagnostic criteria with pathologists and other histotechnologist/cytotechnologist as needed.
- Performs calibration of equipment as required
- Checks and monitors pH of solutions, temperatures, and room humidity on a regular basis by documenting the value for each on the proper chart/log.
- Performs laboratory functions including specimen processing, inventory maintenance, and general work area housekeeping duties
- Adheres to standard operating procedures, work instructions, and policies.
- Notifies management regarding trends, changes, or problems as they occur.
- Completes all procedures expected in the scheduled time without loss of work quality.
- Follows the College of American Pathologist (CAP) requirements for performing proficiency testing and reporting results.
- Participates in laboratory quality management functions.
- Assist with gathering data and possible transport of samples.
- Performs all procedures as per policy and procedure.
- Required attendance at staff meetings and all other training including continuing education programs.
- Performs other duties and works in other areas as assigned.

Skills:
- Technical:
- Ability to process, stain, and microscopically review cytologic preparations
- Ability to perform basic computer keyboard data entry.

- Ability to interact with other health care professional in a professional courteous manner and demonstrating good communication skills.
- Ability to understand and communicate in oral and written English.
- Organizational:
- Ability to follow directions regarding assigned tasks, dealing with priority tasks first, and complete remaining tasks within the established time frames.
Experience and Education:
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- BS or BA degree in clinical laboratory or one of chemical or biological sciences
- One year in an AMA approved Cytotechnology program or a 2+1 program.
- ASCP Cytotechnologist (CT) registration
- Successful completion of Thin Prep & Imager Training
- Pass the national cytology proficiency exam or equivalent
- Meet qualifications as described in CLIA 88’, 42 CFR Part 493 Cytotechnologist for Cytology Laboratories Performing High Complexity Testing.
PREFERRED POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
- Three years of experience as a cytotechnologist for supervisory position
- Meet qualifications as described in CLIA 88’, 42 CFR Part 493 Cytotechnologist for Cytology General Supervisor and Cytotechnologist in Laboratories Performing High Complexity Testing.
The estimated range is the budgeted amount for this position. Final offers are based on various factors, including skill set, experience, location, qualifications and other job-related reasons.
